Carter says a lot without talking sometimes. She just fixes those blue eyes on me and I can tell exactly what she’s thinking.
Right now her eyes are saying “he didn’t have to die” and “you didn’t have to kill him” and “some people would call that murder”. There’s most definitely no “with all due respect” contained in that gaze. For the moment, “respect” isn’t in my 2IC’s vocabulary. I’m pretty sure “trust” isn’t either.
She turns away and walks down the ramp. Onlookers think she stayed silent, but her eyes said plenty. Her eyes said more than enough.
I linger on the ramp for a moment and think about life and decisions and what I’ve gone through to bring me to this point. I think about how I’m going to explain to Hammond why I just killed an unarmed man.
Most of all, I think about regaining my friends’ trust.
Maybe they’ll never look at me quite the same again.
